As a Certified Meditation Instructor I encounter many people who seek out a meditation practice with the intent of experiencing the benefits meditation has to offer. And, of course, one of the greatest benefits meditation seekers want is the 'Stress Reduction' Benefit. This means that meditation itself should not be stressful.
Unfortunately, many of these seekers give up before they reap any benefits. The problem is that they get stressed out over the process of meditation itself. If you happen to fall into this category, here are Five Essential Points that may help you start reaping one of the major benefits you really want from meditation.
1. Your mantra is just a vehicle for transport: Don't analyze your mantra or wonder if it's working, remember it is only a vehicle to get you to that quiet place. Your mantra is just a faint idea that will disappear when it serves its purpose.
2. Accept that your thoughts are part of the process: The nature of your mind is to think, so that means that thoughts are part of the process of meditation. You will have many, many thoughts, don't analyze them, just observe them and let them go.
3. Let go of any expectations you may have: If you are expecting to change overnight because you've been meditating for a week it's not going to happen. Meditation is like farming. It takes time to plant, gather, and distribute. Just let what happens be okay.
4. Make meditation a daily practice: Place meditation on your daily to do list as a priority. Don't meditate just when you feel like it or when time allows. Meditation is a discipline that takes practice. When the benefits start showing up, they will reinforce your practice.
5. Practice effortlessly: Meditation should never be forced. If you force yourself, you will struggle. Be gentle with yourself. Meditation is really a time for non-doing. If you stress over your meditation practice, you defeat the whole purpose of meditation.
By now you may be thinking these five points are easier said than done, and that may be true. Understanding the process of meditation is an important component in helping you to keep moving forward with your practice.
Just don't give up and keep in mind that your success with your meditation practice is determined by your commitment to yourself and no one else.
Remember: Daily and Effortlessly. Daily and Effortlessly.
